How do I play?

Every square on the screen is the same shade except one. Tap the odd one out and the next board appears. The grid grows with the level — 2×2, 3×3, 4×4 and 5×5 — and the gap between the two shades keeps getting smaller.

Tap the wrong square and the run ends, taking you back to the start screen.

What is the difference between the two modes?

Without Time: no clock. Look for as long as you like before deciding. Each correct tap adds the level number to your score.

With Time: five seconds per level. Whatever you do not spend is added to your score, so answering fast is worth a lot more. If the clock runs out, the run ends.

Each mode keeps its own best score, so there are two records to beat.

How many lives do I have?

None, in the good sense: you can play as much as you like. There is no life counter, no waiting and nothing to watch in order to keep playing. Miss one, go back to the start screen, and start again straight away.

I cannot tell which square is different

From level 31 onwards the gap between the two shades narrows sharply, and it keeps narrowing every few levels. There comes a point where it depends on your screen brightness and the light around you: turn the brightness up and find a spot without glare.

If you would rather take your time, the untimed mode lets you stare at the screen for as long as you need.

I lost my best scores

Scores are saved on your device only, not in the cloud. If you uninstall the app or change phone, they do not travel with you. It is also why we never ask you for an account.

Are there ads or in-app purchases?

Neither. Tap Square shows no advertising of any kind and sells nothing. It does not connect to the internet either: it works exactly the same in airplane mode.
